Rebel Angel

What sacrifices are required to survive the lumbering centuries between morning and night?
beautiful creature amidst dust beasts I was sure you were born in the tumbling clouds canopies
you vanished with the arrival of the wild birds then the burning dark became too blazing and the quiet too loud
impossible thing I went by way of the mighty and changing winds
in this labyrinth of Being you were so divine as to be an imagining
This is the universe of fire you live inside
This is how you die, from the infinities of grief
sinner saint and void the tripartite mind divides again
Rebel angel starving in the dark groves of god
for many midnights I was molted by tombs of moonlight, dreaming of my desires—
Like sacrificed Iphigenia I was an offering to the high winds
Katabasis again I am falling into fires, my life in ellipsis
Back in the battlefields of this broken and beckoning world
What sacrifices are required to survive the lumbering centuries between morning and night?
a voice rose from the void and spoke in echoes: this is the dismal bargain of creation
I AM I AM that ancient darkness again
rebel angel manacled in these lands of black ash,
I believed in the god that would save me
to survive the apocalypse, I prayed you at my lips and my prayer was for the abyss
the ravenous wolf knows devouring is a kind of holiness
a coward in the wolves yawning jaws, I shrink before the magnitude of my life and its ruins
rebel angel of creation burning in this pure fire you must survive
sinner saint and void the tripartite mind divides
seasons in dreaming heaven somehow I am at the edge of desire again
days of carnage, I live in a gilded kingdom in bondage and I witnessed—
mountainsides lit by golden Orion’s fires, heads of dead snakes surging to meet me in fearing Eden
rebel angel manacled in these lands of black ash,
I believed in the god that would release me
to survive the apocalypse, I prayed you at my lips and my prayer was for the abyss
